Welcome to Nursery
In our class we strive to establish an Early Years environment which provides for all its pupils, a happy and secure environment in which to learn and be cared for. It is a place where every child is recognised as an individual and is helped to understand that they have great value for being themselves!
The Early Years curriculum
In our classroom we consider ‘Characteristics of Effective Learning’ which promote positive attitudes to learning, an enthusiasm for knowledge and the confidence to become successful learners.
Characteristics of Effective Learning
Playing and Exploring
Active Learning
Creating and Thinking Critically
Children will explore, discover and investigate using a range of open ended resources, following their own interests and accessing adult led learning time. We believe that children learn best when they are engaged in real, hand on, exciting experiences.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is how the Government and Early Years professional describe the time in your child’s life between birth and 5 years. EYFS follows its own curriculum divided into seven areas. These areas are made up of prime areas and specific areas. Each area of learning has a set of related expectations for typical development through the Early Years.
The prime areas are:
Personal, social and emotional development (self-regulation; managing self; building relationships)
Communication and language (listening, attention and understanding; speaking)
Physical development (gross motor skills; fine motor skills)
The specific areas are:
Literacy (comprehension; word reading; writing)
Mathematics (number; numerical patterns)
Understanding the world (past and present; people, culture and communities; the natural world)
Expressive arts and design (creating with materials; being imaginative and creative)
We have started our phonics with a stretch and a bounce, all the children have been extremely enthusiastic learning the sounds and stretching and bouncing them. The children have taken phonics outdoors using naturel resources around them to form letters, they have also had fun marking making outdoors with big chalk, water and paint brushes writing their names. The excitement learning these sounds has been echoing in the air.
In maths we have be exploring length, height and patterns, the children have really thought outside the box drawing their families in height order. They have really grasped the concept of the ABAB pattern, with some children developing their patterns further.
Our topic this term in nursery is looking at different forms of transport, people who help us and the emergency services. We were so lucky to be visited by the Wetherby Blue Fire Brigade. The firefighters were extremely helpful; they showed the children around the fire engine and showed us all their equipment and explained clearly what it is used for. The children asked some extremely well thought-out questions and were very polite and grateful.
We have enjoyed celebration the King's Coronation at nursery, we made crowns and biscuits for our picnic. We joined the rest of the school to sing the National Anthem and after our picnic we had a royal disco.
We have been learning about our world and environment and how important it is to look after it and recycle.
In maths recently we have been exploring the number 5 and 6 we have tried to write these numbers and find them around our classroom in their different forms. We have also been exploring 2D and 3D shapes we have created pieces of art work with shapes and found shapes around our classroom. We have also been on a shape hunt outside in our play ground.
This summer term 1 we are learning about different types of transport and our journey to and from nursery. We are looking at maps and creating maps of our journey to school and around school. We have shared with each other photos and stories of what things we see on our journeys to nursery.
We have had a wonderful time crafting with our grown ups, we made Easter cards for our loved ones and Easter head bands. We are looking forward to planning the next crafting session. We enjoyed Easter treats and sharing our resources with our friends and families.
I can feel the beat, I can copy the beat, I can play an instrument, I can rhyme, I love to sing. I attend music assembly.
I know how old I am, I know how may snacks I can have, I can write numbers, I can find numbers, I can create patterns and have fun with shapes. I use maths every day without realising.
I am learning to write, I can make marks to represent my name using anything and everything. I love stories, I enjoy looking through nonfiction books. I like asking questions, I adore listening to my friends.
Let me make history, tell me and I will remember, let me take pictures/photos I love sharing my stories with my friends and teachers. I’m making history!

In nursery we are born to explore and love to know where we are from, where we live and where our friend’s and teachers are from, what do they eat, what do they like?
My teachers like to aid independence, and help strengthen muscles in my little hands, to do this I play with playdough, carrying out hole punching and treading activities to support this.
My teachers believe every child is an artist, I have used all mediums and materials to create pieces of art. I have made sculptures, habitats, bee hives, painted with flowers and my creativity does not end here.
My teachers encourage me to critical think and imagine, developing skills and confidence as I go.
