PE and Sport Premium and News
At Primrose Lane, we pride ourselves on being a happy and healthy place to learn. We’ve developed an action plan to ensure this funding is invested (rather than ‘spent’) to maximise the long term impact of our PE provision for pupils and staff.
Our PE provision plan shows how we’re investing the money and the way we closely monitor the impact of these initiatives through assessment of children’s skills, staff and pupil feedback, uptake of clubs etc.
If you would like any further information please contact Mr Jackson, our PE and Sport Leader.
Over this academic year, I’m sure your children have enjoyed participating and competing in various sports and small games, as well as learning within their two hours of PE per week. There continues to be more of a focus than ever on PE and Sport in all schools, not just to encourage healthy active lifestyles, but also to develop the children’s social and emotional enjoyment, which has been shown to link to success within other areas of the curriculum.
This year, again, primary schools have received funding called Sport Premium, which is ring-fenced and can only be used to specifically develop Physical Education (PE), sport and physical activity in school. After an evaluation, schools have then been awarded a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum award or nothing at all within the Sainsbury’s School Games Quality Mark. The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.
As part of our application, we were asked to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and we are pleased that the hard work of everyone at our school has been rewarded again this year.
Following our recent application for the 2023-24 academic year, Primrose Lane is very proud to announce that we achieved the Gold for the Sainsburys School Games Quality Mark, maintaining our award for many years, which is a fantastic achievement for a small school!
We would like to congratulate all staff and children for their efforts and cooperation within PE and Sport and hope it continues to progress further. We must recognise and thank the parents and carers of our children who continue to support us and help us achieve our vision within sport and PE.
If you have any questions or suggestions of ways of further developing the PE and Sport here at Primrose Lane, please come and see Mr Jackson (PE and Sport Coordinator).
Cross Country City Finals Competition
On Wednesday 12th February 2025, 22 children from Years 3 - 6 competed in the Cross Country City Finals Competition held at Temple Newsam due to their achievements in first round. The children represented Primrose Lane amazingly; showing impeccable behavior, fabulous sportsmanship and outstanding perseverance.
All the children put in their best efforts as they were striving to achieve a personal best and run with pride for their school. Year 3 girls (Holly, Abby, Thea, Mollie, Hannah), Year 4 girls (Mia, Amber J, Amber E, Holly, Jasmine), Year 5 girls (Jasmine, Lucy, Isla, Milly, India), Alfie and Amarri from Year 3 boys, Sam and Joshua from Year 4 boys, Ollie V from Year 5 boys and Jemima from Year 6 girls all competed in their respective age group genders to try to get through to West Yorkshire Finals.
It was an emotional day to say the least! The crowd was screaming with happiness , as all schools were respectfully competitive, so many people pushing towards the finish line as our teammates gave it their all. By the end, competitors were so fatigued, but demonstrated such effort, enthusiasm and grit to finish as best they could.
The results aren’t in yet, but we are very proud of some excellent finishes and we hope we get some through to the West Yorkshire Finals!
Thank you to all the Parents/Carers who transported their children and showed their support and helped Mr Jackson with the teams and keeping the children safe, it was very much appreciated.
KS2 Orienteering Festival
All of KS2 enjoyed a thrilling day of orienteering with Simon from ‘Airenteers’. The children loved learning map skills, teamwork and younger Year 3 children could not believe how tiring map work could be – yet children in Years 4-6 were ready to go again and were very excited to get going! All children got very competitive with the electronics involved, clocking in at the start of their task and clocking out once finishing (with their ‘dibbers’, then gaining a time (which they were all wanting to beat each other’s time!).
The activities involved following trails and drawing them out on their maps with their white board pens. They then ‘followed the leader’ and gave each other challenges. Secondly, children were given ‘kites’, where they had to hide them, identify a starting point (with a triangle) on their maps, as well as the finishing point (with two circles) for their challengers to find. Finally, they finished with the time trials, where they chose various different trails and were timed on their completion (which brought the element of challenge, and resulted in some very tired competitors!).
Older children were also given electronic ‘dibbers’ and maps, where they had to navigate to the different ‘kites’ in the correct order (or even their own choice of order) and try and achieve the best time in the groups. They even got chance to manoeuvre some bath toys around for each other to locate and move from certain kites to others for their partners! The navigation skills were essential, as well as speed and stamina. It was impressive to see some of the competitiveness of the children, but also the fitness!
Here’s what some of the children had to say about their experience:
Year 3
Year 3 were fantastic at their first Orienteering session. They showed fantastic team work and listened really well to all of the instructions in order to be successful. They've already shown a lot of stamina and improved map reading skills just from our first session. They were very proud of their times for the various routes and worked very hard to complete the challenges put to them. Amazing effort Year 3!
Mollie Y3 'It was fun when we did the first game and the dibbers'
Alife Y3 'It was really fun and I can't wait to do it again'
Hattie Y3 'It was fun because I needed to remember lots of things'
Amarri Y3 'It was pretty hard finding the different numbers but I enjoyed it'.
Year 4
Tom - It was really fun doing orienteering with my partner Austin
Jenson - I liked doing orienteering with my partner. Me and Josh completed lots of maps in the first game!
Gracie - I really liked it - me and Charlotte were really fast and completed 4 maps in the first game
Sam - I did alot better with the map compared to last year. In Year 3, I kept forgetting where I was heading and going to the wrong place!
Lily - Last year I relied on my partner to read the map whereas this year I could do it on my own!
Year 5
Cassia – I enjoyed using the flags and dibbers. It was difficult to locate the right flags and link them with their numbers.
Zoe – It was really fun because we haven’t done it since last year.
Bethany – I liked how it was just for fun and not a competition, but like a competition for yourself!
Lillie – I liked the toy game, finding it and relocating it.
Forest School
This term we have been so excited to welcome Fern and Feather Forest School to Primrose Lane. Their leader and founder Liz Chandler is a qualified teacher and forest school leader. Since meeting Liz in October last year she has worked tirelessly and transformed our outdoor classroom space and field space into a fantastic forest school space.
Forest school offers children a unique opportunity to learn and develop through hands-on experiences in our dedicated outdoor area on the school site. Children learn to assess risks independently in a natural environment, strengthen their problem-solving abilities through natural play, and boost their confidence by mastering new outdoor skills.
Research shows that regular forest school sessions significantly improve children's physical and emotional wellbeing. The outdoor environment encourages active play, enhancing gross motor skills and physical fitness. Working collaboratively on projects like den building and playing games help to develop social skills and emotional resilience.
During sessions children have the chance to:
- Outdoor cooking and fire safety
- Tool use under careful supervision
- Natural craft projects based on seasonal change
- Team challenges and problem-solving activities
Liz runs community classes on a Monday morning and over the weekend. Children that attend Primrose Lane can attend these at a 15% discount with the code PRIMROSE. On a Monday afternoon Liz is working with children at Primrose Lane, here are some of the comments from the children that have attended so far:
Harlow - I like Liz because they are really kind and give us lots of choices and respect at forest school.
Elin - I like it because we get to do things with our friends.
Wilf - I really like forest school because the mud kitchen is great for playing in. I like putting mud in the wheelbarrow.
Cross Country Competition - First Round
This week, 38 children from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 competed in a cross country competition held at St Theresa’s Catholic Primary School. The children represented Primrose Lane excellently; showing impeccable behaviour, fabulous sportsmanship and great perseverance – it really was pleasing to see such excellent attitudes and desire to do their best!
All the children put in their best efforts and cheered each other through every race! It was fabulous to watch the children striving to achieve a personal best, as well as see some of the Year 6 Sports Leaders supporting the younger children (especially with it being the first year for our Year 3s competing!).
We have now received the results and are pleased to share with you that our Year 3 Girls, Year 4 Girls and Year 5 Girls have all qualified to the City Finals on February 12th at Temple Newsam! Although, the other groups didn’t make it through, they ran their hearts out and achieved some excellent results, just missing out on qualifying by a small margin. Additionally, despite their team not getting through, the following children are through as individuals to the next round: Oliver V, Sam, Joshua, Alfie and Amarri; meaning 20 of the children qualified! Congratulations to all children, your effort, resilience and stamina really shone through; we are very proud of all of you!
Thank you to all the Parents/Carers who helped me on the day, showing their support and helping motivate the teams. We look forward for the next round to do it all again, but until then, well done all competitors!

Year 5 Wharfe Valley Learning Partnership Football Competition
Year 5 took to the annual Year 5 WVLP football competition with such positivity and enthusiasm. 8 schools were involved in all, including: Collingham, Harewood, Bardsey, St Joseph's, Thorp Arch, Crossley Street and St Mary's.
The team involved Luke, Jasmine, Evan, Aidan, Wesley, Harvey, Ollie S, Ollie V and Archie. All children played brilliantly, represented the school proudly and worked well as a cohesive team, supporting and encouraging each other. They were very respectful throughout each game, scoring with grace, congratulating others and shaking hands at the end of each game. One of the referees made a particular mention about some of our players and their excellent conduct, honesty in the game and general decorum, which was wonderful for hear.
The first match was against St Mary's which was a thriller! Against the run of play, Primrose were 0-1 down early on through an excellent through ball and finish; Luke didn't stand a chance in such a huge net! Despite this, Luke made some excellent saves to keep us in it, then Ollie V dribbled skill-fully past two players and slotted home a brilliant equaliser towards the end of the game. Primrose came into their own and were firing all cylinders, scoring again and winning the game 2-1 with two Ollie V goals; ideal start!
The second came was against Crossley Street, where we played brilliantly, scoring 2 great goals by Evan and Ollie S, but unfortunately we let in 3 soft goals towards the end to lose this tie 2-3. Their keeper had a fantastic game also, preventing some good efforts.
Third game against Harewood saw us win 3-0 with super team goals from Ollie V, and Archie with two lovely finishes. A comfortable game where the team showed resilience and enthusiasm from the last game - great attitude and team work!
Fourth game saw another two beauties from Archie with excellent link up play in midfield with Ollie S and Ollive V to secure a 2-0 victory against St Joseph's.
Fifth game took some determination and grit where we drew 2-2 with Thorp Arch, showing perseverance in a tough battle where we were down most of the game - great character! Two good goals from Archie and Ollie V.
Sixth game was a tough battle with Bardsey with two brilliant goals by Evan and Archie, but we let it go at the end conceding three late goals to lose 2-3.
Seventh game was a comfortable victory 1-3 against Collingham, another super team performance and testament to the team's character throughout.
As a result, we were in third place in the league with a great form and played in the semi finals, where again, against the run of play, we unfortunately conceded and lost the game 1-3 against Thorp Arch.
Finally we played in the runners up plate final and were unlucky to lose on penalties in a harsh battle, despite some brilliant penalties!
A wonderful effort from all, with some truly great play; well done team! Thank you to Mrs Dykes for helping on the day and supporting throughout.
Skipping festival Oct 2024
On Thursday, each class from Reception-Year 6 participated in a skipping festival hosted by the company Skipping Schools Ltd, led by Katie. The day was fabulous, with all children learning the benefits of skipping for physical activity and health, as well as socially playing in the playground and outside of school. Children also learnt about persevering and if they struggled, carried on giving it a go. Each class learnt how to safely skip, as well as various different techniques, ranging from ‘single bounce, double bounce, hopping, split legs, speed skip, side step, back-to-back, change places, side-swing, criss-cross, pretzel’; and many more! Children and staff alike found how tiring it can be, as our heart rates raced up quite quickly. We all loved the experience. The group skipping was impressive throughout school with the long rope - we hope to see more in the playground next half term!
Here are some quotes about what some of the classes had to say about the day:
Year 1: All children loved their skipping experience – well done in particular to Zara Bray with her excellent skipping showcase in the assembly!
Year 2:
Dora "It was really, really, really good!"
Eddison "A little bit scary, but fun"
Frankie "Super! I got faster at skipping"
Issy "Fantastic!"
Year 4:
Logan – ‘It was really fun! My favourite skip was the side swing which I am going to do in assembly!’
Jenson – ‘I liked it but it was really had to do the competition challenges.’
James – ‘I didn't like it, I LOVED it! My favourite one was the side swing but my favourite of all time remains face to face.’
Lily – ‘I liked showing the side swing.’
Mia – ‘It was amazing to learn these new skills.’
Eddie – ‘It was very energetic and fun and I am looking forward to the competition!’
Lucie – ‘I liked the double bounce the best.
Year 5:
Run, jump out was brilliant! Children showed excellent resilience and attitude when mistakes happened, then rectified them with great confidence!
